I am planning a mini driving trip (not in a mini)jester to Scotland and back. Im planning on camping (to keep costs down).

Im going to travel up from Oxford and stop off in the Lake District, as I Know the roads around there are something special. From here I am then planning on travelling North, possibly to Edinburgh? idea But then I dont know where the good pure driving roads are in Scotland. driving

Can anyone suggest some of the better roads in Scotland, as well as some of the ones to avoid! bounce

Hi Chris, I highly recommend the A7 or A68. You could join the A7 at Carlisle and follow it all the way to Melrose then join the A68. I live in Edinburgh and normally do those roads on the bike. Fantastic views. Can't go wrong

Ooh, I forgot about the A701. So many good roads, you're spoilt for choice

OK:

1. A8 to Glasgow (it's dull and horrible, but quick)
2. A82 to Tarbet
3. A83 / A816 via Kilmartin (stop off at the museum for excellent tea and cake)
4. A828 / A82 to Fort William
5. A82 back via Crianlarich

On the way back down at the top of the M6, turn off onto the A686 at Penrith, go to Alston, right onto the B6277, in Middleton in Teesdate, turn on the B6276 to Brough and then the A685 to Tebay services.

The A87 from fort william up to Skye road is also worth a mention.

You really have to get North of Edinburgh / Glasgow. After that it's all good.

(but don't tell anyone!)

Cheers,

FT.

Not quite - avoid the A9 - Kojaks with Kodaks, boring, slow HGVs, lunatics trying to pass said HGVs. Avoid the A90 - lots of cameras, boring.

Apart from that - I agree!

Pretty much anywhere north of Fort W is good, even the A9! wink

Sounds like a good plan! I love it up there and have done 3 driving weekends of 1200 miles each over the years.

Here's a map of my perfect route, but it's a bit epic. There are great roads everywhere you look.

There's some great camping up there too, especially further north where there are several sites overlooking lochs or the sea. Just watch out for midges and caravans at this time of year - Spring or Autumn is best.

Have a good one!

Steve

My only disagreement is the bit from Tarbet to Ballachulish. I'd definitely go via Lochgilphead and Oban.

I've only done Oban-Fort William, not the other half. Whats it like? The bit I did was a perfect twisty MX-5 road from what I remember. Rannoch Moor & Glencoe are very dramatic and the road is super fast, my first trip through there in an Impreza was amazing.

It just gets better the further north you go.
